Snacks don’t have to be unhealthy chips and sugary cookies all the time. If your kid likes the crunch of potato chips, how about giving him a taste of some tofu chips as well? Kids will eat healthier foodstuff if they’re exposed to more choices…crunch or no crunch!
Kids will eat anything they enjoy eating, as any mom or dad whose child has just has his first taste of potato chips can attest. But just because “enjoyment” is in the picture doesn’t mean only junk-filled items should make it on the menu. Healthier fare can be enjoyable too, if you teach your kids to appreciate the taste of natural food. However, how often one eats and how much of a day’s calories are taken from them can be the cause of poor nutrition. Not just junk, but the healthier fare should be given limits, too!
How do you teach your child to enjoy eating healthier snack fare? Play up the visual factor. Colors, for example, the more colourful, the better. Give him a rainbow platter: turnip (singkamas), carrots, apple, pears – these fruits and vegetables are colourful and crunchy. Or add more nutrients to fun-to-eat finger food: add fish to cheese sticks to make fish sticks, carrot bits to burgers to make vitamin A burgers, or julienned bell peppers to homemade pizza.
Snack times rules for parents: As mentioned earlier, eating must be enjoyable for a child to learn to eat healthy. Thus, it isn’t just the food that parents should consider – also how the make their kids eat. The nutritional dietitian is quick to say that eating should not be treated like a reward or punishment. Good timing is essential in helping your child appreciate the taste of different food; so introducing any new food along with his favourites helps him to be more inclined to try them out. Another aspect of good timing is scheduling snack time with mealtime in mind.
Speaking of drinks, it’s good to teach your child to drink water and not juice drinks or sodas with his snacks. Simply offer him plain ice-cold water or real fruit juice instead of the sugary concoctions, if he doesn’t get used to sweet drinks, then that’s better for his body (and teeth). The worst is powdered juice or iced tea. Powdered juice is mostly sugar- check the list of ingredients: sugar is first, so it is purely sugar content. Iced tea, on the other hand, has caffeine and must not be given to kids at all.
Finally, there’s no better teacher in eating healthy than the parent. If you want your tot to eat right, show him that you’re eating right also. Share a snack of sliced fruits (or a bag of popcorn sans the butter) with your child.
