Mid-year update on GiveWell's progress
We published a blog post
summarizing GiveWell's progress so far this year. In short, our research team is focused on increasing the number of interventions we have reviewed as potential priority programs, and we've published a number of new intervention reports
as a result. We are also dedicating significant research staff capacity to GiveWell Incubation Grants
, our work to grow the pipeline of potential future top charities and improve our understanding of our current top charities.
Considering fistula management charities
Our operations team dedicated significant capacity in the first half of the year to the separation of GiveWell and the Open Philanthropy Project
, which was finalized in June. Also, outreach is now a major priority at GiveWell, as we now see our work to identify new donors as more of a limiting factor than research.
An obstetric fistula is an abnormal opening between the vagina and bladder or rectum that is often caused by prolonged obstructed labor and may be highly detrimental to well-being. We're considering fistula management, including surgery, as a potential priority program. We wrote a blog post
outlining our open questions around fistula management programs and our plans to partner with IDinsight, an international NGO, to help answer these questions. We also published an intervention report
that discusses fistula management in additional detail. We're hiring!
